MONDRAGON wins the Business Dragon Award

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in China held its awards ceremony dinner in Beijing on 2 November last. The aim of these awards is to recognise the work done by companies and institutions to promote trade relations, investment and business co-operation between Spain and China. The Chamber of Commerce was presenting these awards to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Spain and China.
Track record in China
The jury decided to give the Business Dragon Award to MONDRAGON for its business development in China, which dates back to the 1970s, when companies from the Group exported to China for the first time.
By the middle of the 1980s the Group had opened its own offices in Hong Kong and Beijing. In the early 1990s the first production plants were set up, initially with local partners. MONDRAGON currently has 44 operational units in China: 19 production plants, 10 of them at the‘MONDRAGON Kunshan’ Industrial Park in Shanghai, as well as 19 sales offices and 6 purchasing centres with 3 Corporate Offices: Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. In total more than 1,500 people, including 45 expats and sales totalling $340m in 2012.
The co-operative Group currently has the biggest operational network of any Spanish firm in China.
The award was received by Josu Ugarte, President of MONDRAGON International, who highlighted the importance of this “explicit recognition of the effort, sacrifice, dedication and courage involved in the excellent work done and still being done by many of our people and pioneering co-operatives in China with a will and a lot of commitment”.
