Self-driving cars: the theme of the seventh Maier International Design Competition

The competition, with prize money totalling over €15,000, will focus on Vehicle Design and Colour & Trim and is aimed at both professional and amateur designers. The deadline for submitting entries is 30 March 2017.

"Appearance Design of Self-Driving Cars in 2030 (Spaces and Interaction)". This is the compelling, challenging title of Maier S.Coop’s 7th International Design Competition. The prize money totals over €15,000 and the deadline for submitting entries is 30 March 2017.

 The theme of the competition is to envisage new concepts for driverless vehicles in 2030, with regard to formal languages, functions, finishes, etc., looking at how they will affect the vehicle environments in which Maier provides value today.

Autonomous cars are an ever-closer reality, and today we can affirm that it is technologically possible to build driverless vehicles. 

This technology may enhance safety, reduce traffic congestion and even contribute to creating new mobility concepts (vehicles as a service, ridesharing, etc.)... but what about design? How will vehicle design by influenced by the self-driving car? What new functions will it bring with it? And what about new products? And new appearance concepts (materials, finishes, graphics, etc.)?

New to this year’s competition: surfaces and shapes

This is the seventh time the competition has been held, and this year it will focus not only on vehicle decoration (colour & trim) but will instead take on a whole new dimension and include the vehicle’s surfaces and shapes. The Jury, made up of automotive sector design department managers, representatives of design centres and public institutions, will evaluate C&T design, style (i.e. the formal design of the vehicle) and the integration of both.
